Identifying and managing the risks in your client’s home keeps you and them safe. Conduct a risk assessment for the care you will be delivering, during your introductory visit, or your first visit. Doing it during your intro visit is a great way to assure your client that you are a competent professional.

You are going to want to do this during your first visit or during your introductory visits. Your observations should start as you approach the house, by looking out for your own safety and any obstacles on the way to the front door, that you or the client might encounter.

Different carers choose to fill it out in different ways. They either fill it out as they go, or do it once they have left the client’s company. In either case, be sure to take note of any risks identified. Finally, make sure you have seen all areas, including bedrooms, bathrooms, living rooms and kitchens before you leave the client’s company.

Identifying the risks is not enough, putting in place mitigations is the key outcome. Look to remove the risk altogether or put in steps to minimise it.

Clients have reportedly been impressed by carers that identify and mitigate risks in their loved one’s homes, so don’t be afraid to conduct a risk assessment, it will be appreciated.

You may like to share a little guidance around how to make the home safe and accessible to the person being cared for, please do share this like with them, for that: https://primecarers.co.uk/home-modifications/
