Description
In 1994 after the deaths of both ny aunt and uncle I took on the role of carer for my 2 cousins who both had learning disabilities. One was in a residential home but I had contact with her on a daily basis and her sister lived with me. Both were visually impaired and needed care with all their every day needs. I arranged outings to the cinema, restaurants, cafes, theatre and included them in almost every thing I did. We went on holidays and had many memorable occasions. I became very good at ensuring that ever thing was accessible and wheel chair friendly. They understood what I said but they both had their own way of communicating and I was able to understand them both and fulfill their needs. I guided and supported them as much as possible to maintain their independence and so that they had a good life filled with love and care. I am not saying it was always easy but with understanding we overcame the difficulties. One cousin passed away in 2010 and sadly in 2021 her sister also passed away.
Whilst caring for them I worked part time and my roles were predominantly in the school system and involved being a support assistant, an exams officer and more recently house keeper in a large academy.
I like to think of myself as being time efficient, a good listener, able to follow instructions, good understanding of English both written and verbal.
I have done voluntary work in numerous organisations over the years including 10 years with Bradford Nightspot, on the panel discussing Hate crimes and visiting people held in police cells to see that they were being treated fairly, all of which I have enjoyed doing and I have been an active member in the community.
My interests include reading, crosswords, scrabble, cinema, travel, visiting places, swimming and going to the gym.
I have had experience of both live-in care and hourly care.
I do not smoke or drink. I have no driving convictions and went to Thomas Danby college in Leeds to improve my culinary skills.
