As an independent carer, you are responsible for keeping your training certificates up to date. This includes any documents proving your practical skills, which are often necessary components of any training you have received. Keeping up to date with the latest methods, techniques and information is beneficial for both you and your client and will allow you to deliver care to the highest standards.
To help you find the best value for money, PrimeCarers has put together a list of UK-based training providers that offer low-cost, high-quality training, both over the phone and online. These providers offer plenty of educational resources to bring you up to speed before you are assessed. You are tested by multiple-choice: you will be required to read a series of questions and tick the box containing the correct answer. Should you need to retake the test, or wish to improve your initial grade, assessments can be repeated. To help you improve, the learning material can be continually revisited.
Once you have attained the passing grade, you will be presented with a printable online certificate. Online exams cover all of your mandatory training, as well as a range of other areas. These may include:
To help devise the best assessment program for you, you can contact any of the training companies below via telephone, email, or their online chat-services.
Low-Cost e-Learning offers a number of training packages for independent carers. Once registered, you will receive access via email to their entire range of online training courses.

Social Care TV offer courses on a pay-as-you-go basis. Once you’ve set up an account, you will be able to purchase credits to pay for the courses you wish to take. Price start at as little as £1.49 (as of 2018). Social Care TV offer a special discount for those who purchase several credits at once. After setting up your account, you will be able to design the ideal course structure to suit your requirements.

To complement your online theory tests, the St John Ambulance offers a number of practical courses, plus much more you may find beneficial to your training. Whilst they do charge for some of their training courses, many are offered free of charge but do ask for a donation to support the vital services they provide. Upon passing your course, St John Ambulance will award you with a certificate to prove your proficiency.

To upload your documents, visit the PrimeCarers platform. Here, you will be able to upload your qualifications and any other relevant documents. As prospective clients may wish to review your qualifications, PrimeCarers advises that all mandatory training units are kept up to date. This not only proves your professional competency in all areas of care but will also give future clients the confidence they need in making the right decision.
If you work for an agency, training will likely be conducted in-house on a yearly basis. Some agencies now opt for online training, so you can keep your units up-to-date remotely. Your company or agency will usually cover any associated costs. If you are an independent carer, you are responsible for arranging your own training but do remember that it is possible to offset any expenses on your yearly tax return by recording these costs as expense outlay.
If anything isn’t clear, we are here to help, so say hi over chat by clicking on the chat icon in the bottom right-hand corner of our website, and we would be happy to talk to you further.
