National Botanic Garden of Wales

The National Botanic Garden of Wales covers 568 acres of the Tywi valley, with the Great Glasshouse, the largest single-span glasshouse in the world, at its centre, alongside a tropical house, a double walled garden and lakes. There is enough here for a full day, but the core garden can be seen in a shorter visit.

Wheelchairs can be borrowed free at the Gatehouse and mobility scooters hired, and much of the core garden is on wide, flat, hard paths, with a Changing Places toilet near the entrance.

Aberglasney House and Gardens

Aberglasney is a restored historic garden around an old mansion in the Tywi valley, with a rare Elizabethan cloister garden, a yew tunnel, walled gardens and the Ninfarium, a sheltered garden of exotic plants inside the ruined rooms of the house. There are tearooms with a terrace overlooking the gardens.

Parking is free with ten accessible bays, wheelchairs can be borrowed free, staff hand out a map with a step-free route, and there are accessible toilets by the shop, in the mansion, tearooms and cattle sheds, though some slopes are steep so a strong helper is needed.

Dinefwr is a National Trust estate on the edge of Llandeilo, with the 17th-century Newton House, a formal fountain garden, an ancient deer park with rare White Park cattle and the ruins of Dinefwr Castle on the hill. Newton House has a café on the ground floor and a takeaway hut by the car park.

There is free Blue Badge parking, adapted toilets in the main car park, level access into Newton House and a long level boardwalk to the mill pond, and the parkland can be walked for free.

The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust centre at Llanelli looks out over the Burry Inlet, with collections of ducks, geese, swans and flamingos close to the paths and hides over the saltmarsh for wild birds. There is a visitor centre with a café and shop.

The paths are mostly level with only two slopes, the hides have step-free entry, accessible parking is free and a mobility scooter can be hired if booked ahead.

Pembrey Country Park is a large area of pine woodland and dunes behind Cefn Sidan, a Blue Flag beach that runs for eight miles along Carmarthen Bay. Old shipwreck timbers can be seen in the sand at the northern end.

The park advises that disabled access to the beach is best through the main entrance by the beach kiosk, so a carer can park nearby and go only as far as is comfortable.

Kidwelly Castle is a well preserved Norman and medieval castle above the River Gwendraeth, built as a castle within a castle with a great gatehouse and towers. It is looked after by Cadw and open all year.

Parc Howard Museum is an Italianate mansion in a public park in Llanelli, reopened after refurbishment with new displays on the town's people and inventions, including the Stepney spare wheel. The reception sells hot drinks, snacks and ice creams.

Talley Abbey is the ruin of a 12th-century abbey in a quiet valley north of Llandeilo, with a tall section of the central tower still standing beside two lakes. It is looked after by Cadw, free to enter and open all year in daylight hours.

The Boathouse in Laugharne was Dylan Thomas's last home, perched above the Taf estuary, with his sitting room, displays on his life and the writing shed where he worked. The tearoom serves light lunches, scones and Welsh cakes.

This one suits a steady walker only, as the entrance is down 40 steps with more steps inside and there is no parking or accessible toilet, though the views of the estuary can be enjoyed from Dylan's Walk above.
