Threave Garden is a National Trust for Scotland garden near Castle Douglas, used as a school of gardening, with a walled garden, glasshouses, rockery, rose garden and wide borders around a Victorian house. The wider estate has wetland walks and bird hides beside the River Dee.

There is a café, visitor centre and shop on site, so a carer can plan a short loop of the formal gardens with a sit-down at the end.

WWT Caerlaverock is a wetland nature reserve on the Solway coast south of Dumfries, famous for the thousands of barnacle geese and whooper swans that arrive each winter. Hides and observation towers look out over the saltmarsh and ponds.

Access around the site is mostly level with no gates, the hides have step-free ground floors with windows at wheelchair height, wheelchairs can be hired and accessible parking is free.

Kirkcudbright Galleries, in the town's former town hall, tell the story of the artists' colony that made Kirkcudbright famous, with work by E.A. Hornel, Jessie M. King and the Glasgow Boys alongside touring exhibitions. There is a café on the first floor.

Dumfries Museum and Camera Obscura

Dumfries Museum tells the story of the land and people of the region, from fossil footprints and Solway wildlife to early Christian stone carvings and Victorian farm life. In an old windmill tower above it is the world's oldest working camera obscura, showing live views of the town when the weather allows.

There is level access and a lift to the first floor, chairs to rest on every level, a disabled toilet on the ground floor and a wheelchair to borrow, though the camera obscura is up a spiral staircase.

Gracefield Arts Centre is Dumfries's art gallery, in a Victorian house and a modern gallery building, showing changing exhibitions and pieces from a collection of more than 600 Scottish paintings and prints. The Studio Café serves home baking and light lunches, and there is a craft shop.

The café, shop and second gallery are fully wheelchair accessible, a wheelchair can be borrowed, there are disabled toilets and marked disabled parking, and staff can arrange a shorter route in from the rear door.

Stranraer Museum is in the town's Old Town Hall of 1776, with new displays on the history of Wigtownshire, including the Second World War and the story of the bodies in the floor. It is a compact museum in the middle of the town.

Wigtown is a small historic market town that became Scotland's National Book Town in 1998, with around twenty bookshops and book businesses around its wide main square. Second-hand bookshops, cafés and inns make it an easy place to spend a few hours.
