The Hill of The O'Neill was the seat of the O'Neill chiefs of Tyrone, and a glass observation tower at the top gives views over seven of the nine counties of Ulster, from Lough Neagh to the Sperrins. Ranfurly House next door, on the market square, tells the story of the O'Neills and the Plantation of Ulster.

Ranfurly House sits on the town square with shops and cafés around it, so a carer can pair the exhibition with lunch and decide on the day whether to go up the hill.

Benburb Priory and Benburb Castle

Benburb Castle is a 17th century bawn built on a cliff edge above the River Blackwater, standing in the grounds of Benburb Servite Priory. The priory grounds have woodland walks down to the river and a small library and museum.

The grounds are open every day from 9am to 4pm, and the castle walls can be seen from the priory grounds without the steeper paths down to the river.

Parkanaur Forest Park

Parkanaur Forest Park is a Forest Service woodland on the old Burges estate, with Victorian gardens, a herd of white deer and paths along the Torrent River. Several waymarked walks and an ecotrail start and finish at the main car park.

All the walks start from the main car park, so a carer can choose a short loop past the deer enclosure and head back whenever needed.

Round Lake

Round Lake is a small council-run lakeside park a short walk from the village of Fivemiletown, popular with anglers and walkers. It sits in the Clogher Valley close to the Blessingbourne Estate and the Carleton Trail.

It is a quiet, compact spot close to the village, so an older visitor can sit by the water and a carer can keep the walk as short as needed.

St Macartan's Cathedral, Clogher

St Macartan's is the small Church of Ireland cathedral of the Diocese of Clogher, rebuilt in the 1740s on an ancient church site. Two early high crosses stand in the churchyard, and the village lies in the green Clogher Valley.

The cathedral is small and on the main street of the village, so a visit is short and easy to fit with a drive along the Clogher Valley.

Knockmany Forest

Knockmany Forest covers a hill above the Clogher Valley near Augher, with woodland walks and a Neolithic passage tomb at the summit decorated with carved stones. From the top there are wide views over the valley.

The path to the tomb is uphill from the car park, so for an older visitor a carer may prefer the lower woodland paths and the views from the car park area.
