National Museum of Flight

The National Museum of Flight is on a Second World War airfield at East Fortune, with military and civil aircraft displayed in wartime hangars, including a Concorde you can walk through. There are exhibitions on flight, wartime life on the base and the Aviator Café.

The site is wheelchair accessible with ramped hangars, wheelchairs can be borrowed free on arrival, parking is free with accessible spaces throughout, and you can drive between the hangars to save walking.

Scottish Seabird Centre

Scottish Seabird Centre

The Scottish Seabird Centre sits on North Berwick harbour with live cameras trained on the Bass Rock gannet colony and other islands in the Firth of Forth, plus exhibitions about the sea and its wildlife. The café looks out over the beach and the water.

The centre has level access with a lift between its two floors, an accessible toilet, wheelchairs to borrow if you ask ahead and Blue Badge parking beside the building, although the boat trips are not suitable for people with limited mobility.

Tantallon Castle

Tantallon Castle

Tantallon Castle is a huge red sandstone curtain wall built by the Douglas earls on a clifftop facing the Bass Rock. Visitors can explore the ruins and look out over the sea and the gannet colony on the rock.

There are two accessible spaces by the visitor centre and an adapted toilet next to the ticket office, but the castle is 250 metres away along a gravel and gently sloping grass path, so allow time and rests.

Dirleton Castle and Gardens

Dirleton Castle is a medieval castle ruin in the middle of a village green, surrounded by gardens that include one of the longest herbaceous borders in the world. Parts of the ruins are closed during conservation work, but the gardens and several rooms are open.

The garden is all on one level with bound gravel paths, a flat lawn and benches throughout, but the nearest adapted toilets are in North Berwick, so plan a stop there.

The John Gray Centre in Haddington holds East Lothian's museum, archives and local library, with displays on the county's history from prehistoric finds to farming and the town's past. Haddington itself is a handsome market town with a riverside church and old streets.

John Muir's Birthplace is the house on Dunbar High Street where the naturalist who helped found America's national parks was born in 1838. Three floors of displays tell his story, and there is a shop.

John Muir Country Park stretches along 8 miles of coast west of Dunbar, with sandy beaches, salt marsh, dunes and the Tyne estuary. It is good for watching wading birds and seals from the shore.

The carer can park at Linkfield car park and keep to the paths near it, checking tide times first if planning to go down to the beach.

Yellowcraig is a sandy beach backed by dunes and woodland near Dirleton, looking out to Fidra, the island with a lighthouse said to have inspired Treasure Island. There are toilets and a children's play area near the car park.

Toilets are on site near the car park and the main path leads towards the beach, so a short walk to see the view of Fidra is manageable.

Glenkinchie is a whisky distillery in the countryside near Pencaitland, known as the Garden Distillery, with guided tours and tastings and gardens around the old brick buildings. Parking on site is free for visitors.

There are four disabled parking spaces in front of the entrance with a step-free route in, a lift to all floors except the Tun Room, and accessible toilets on each floor of the visitor centre.

Levenhall Links is a large coastal green space on the eastern edge of Musselburgh, built on reclaimed lagoons, with grassland, woodland, a boating pond and a long sea wall. It is one of the best places in Scotland for watching wading birds at high tide.

There are no public toilets on site, so plan a stop in Musselburgh town centre first, and the carer can keep to the paths by the boating pond for a short outing.
