Audley End is a grand Jacobean mansion run by English Heritage, with lavish state rooms, a Victorian service wing and a working stable yard. Its gardens were laid out by Capability Brown and include a large walled organic kitchen garden.

Colchester Castle is the largest Norman keep in Europe, built on the foundations of the Roman Temple of Claudius, and is now a museum of Colchester's history from the Iron Age to the Civil War. It stands in Castle Park, with its gardens, just off the High Street.

The galleries on both floors are step-free with two lifts, there are two accessible toilets, Blue Badge spaces just outside the park gates, and a companion goes free with a disabled visitor.

RHS Garden Hyde Hall is a hilltop garden near Chelmsford with a dry garden, rose gardens, lakes, a global growth vegetable garden and wide views over the Essex countryside. There is a restaurant, café and plant centre by the entrance.

Beth Chatto's gardens near Colchester were created by the plantswoman Beth Chatto on difficult ground, and include the famous dry gravel garden, water gardens and a woodland garden. There is a plant nursery beside the gardens.

Hylands Estate is 574 acres of historic parkland on the edge of Chelmsford around Hylands House, a Neo-Classical villa open to the public on selected days. The Stables have a café, a second-hand bookshop and artists' studios, and there are formal Victorian gardens and woodland.

Blue Badge holders park free all day, the Stables car park has hard paths to the house, and the house has a ramp, a lift and accessible toilets.

Saffron Walden Museum is one of the oldest purpose-built museums in the country, with local history, natural history and world cultures collections, set beside the ruins of Walden Castle. The grounds have benches and are pleasant for a picnic.

Promenade Park runs along the bank of the River Blackwater in Maldon and has been a popular leisure spot for over a hundred years. A walk along the promenade leads to the statue of Byrhtnoth and views of the estuary, Hythe Quay and the site of the Battle of Maldon.
