Greenfield Valley Heritage Park

Greenfield Valley covers 70 acres of former copper works and cotton mills below Holywell, now woodland, mill pools and paths with scheduled ancient monuments along the way. A free visitor centre explains the valley's industry, and an open-air museum of farm buildings and a Victorian schoolroom sits at the lower end.

The council says the park is accessible for all to explore, and the carer can start from the lower car park by the visitor centre and museum and walk only as far up the valley as suits.

Basingwerk Abbey

Basingwerk Abbey is the ruin of a Cistercian abbey founded in the 12th century at the foot of Greenfield Valley, cared for by Cadw. The walls of the chapter house, refectory and church still stand among lawns.

Cadw grades the site as accessible and relatively flat with free parking, though it warns of low historic thresholds that could trip someone with a walker.

Wepre Park and Ewloe Castle

Wepre Park is 160 acres of woodland, gardens and brookside walks in Connah's Quay, with the Old Hall Gardens, a waterfall and a fishing pool. The ruins of the Welsh-built Ewloe Castle stand in the woods at the far end.

The Old Hall Gardens and the paths near the visitor centre make a short, gentle outing, and the council describes its country parks as accessible for all to enjoy.

Flint Castle

Flint Castle was the first of Edward I's castles in Wales, built in 1277 on the shore of the Dee estuary, with an unusual detached great tower. It is free to visit and looks out over the estuary towards the Wirral.

There is one dedicated disabled parking space about 100 metres away, and the castle is small enough to see in a short visit before a sit by the estuary.

Talacre Beach and Point of Ayr Lighthouse

Talacre has a long sandy beach backed by dunes at the mouth of the Dee, with the old Point of Ayr lighthouse standing on the sands. It is part of the Wales Coast Path and a good place to look for shells and wading birds.

The lighthouse can be seen from the dunes near the car park without going far onto the sand, so the carer can keep the walk short.

Mold is a traditional market town below the Clwydian Hills, with a street market of more than 70 stalls on the High Street every Wednesday and Saturday. There is also an indoor market open Monday to Saturday.

The indoor market is open six days a week and gives a sheltered alternative in bad weather, while the street market days are busier and livelier.

Gladstone's Library

Gladstone's Library in Hawarden was founded by the Victorian prime minister William Gladstone and is the UK's only residential library, with historic reading rooms beside the parish church. Its Food for Thought restaurant is open to the public every day.

The restaurant and lounge are open to anyone during the day, so it suits a quiet lunch or coffee in a historic building as part of a trip to Hawarden village.

Theatr Clwyd is the largest producing theatre in Wales, set in parkland on the edge of Mold, with theatres, a cinema, gallery spaces and a café. Matinee performances make a good afternoon out.
