Royal Navy Museums: Hartlepool

The Royal Navy museum at Hartlepool Marina recreates an 18th-century seaport around HMS Trincomalee, a warship from 1817 that visitors can board. Costumed guides, gun demonstrations and workshops show how tradesmen and sailors lived in Nelson's time.

Wheelchairs can reach all outdoor areas of the quayside and the ship's gun deck, and there are disabled toilets, free disabled parking on site and the Quayside Café.

Hartlepool Art Gallery is housed in a restored Victorian church on Church Square, with changing exhibitions of regional and national artists and a shop of locally made crafts. The Vestry Café inside is run by students from a local school.

Seaton Carew seafront

Seaton Carew is Hartlepool's traditional seaside resort, with a sandy beach stretching a mile each way, a promenade, ice cream parlours, arcades and fish and chip shops. To the south the beach runs into protected dunes and on towards Seal Sands.

The promenade gives a place to walk along the sea front, and on a cold day fish and chips in the car facing the North Sea is a good outing in itself.

Ward Jackson Park

Ward Jackson Park is a restored Victorian park on the west side of Hartlepool, listed on the national register of historic parks for its lake, bandstand, fountain and flower gardens. There are bowls and putting greens and a café, The Place in the Park.

The lake circuit and flower gardens can be seen in a short loop, with the café as a stopping point, and band concerts give a reason to sit for an hour in summer.

St Hilda's is an Early English church on the Headland, thought to stand on the site of St Hilda's seventh-century monastery, with huge buttresses, a Norman doorway and the tomb of the Brus family. A visitor centre inside has audio-visual displays and an audio tour.

Refreshments are served in the church, and from outside there are views over the marina and Tees Bay, so a visit can be short and restful.

Hartlepool Marina is a working marina surrounded by cafés, bistros and shops, with hundreds of boats moored in the dock. A promenade links it to Seaton Carew and its sands.

The dockside is a good place to sit and watch the boats, with plenty of cafés close together, so the carer can keep walking short and build the outing around a meal.
