Seven of them are free to visit or to walk around. The access information for three confirm an accessible toilet. Where a place does not publish its access, we say so.

Powis Castle and Garden

Powis Castle is a medieval red-stone castle above Welshpool, cared for by the National Trust, with richly furnished rooms and a collection of treasures from India brought back by Clive of India. Its famous Italianate terraced gardens step down the hillside below the castle walls.

The castle sits on a steep hill and the gardens are on terraces, so a carer should check the National Trust access information and plan to see one level of the garden well rather than all of it.

Cathedral · Brecon

Brecon Cathedral

Brecon Cathedral stands on a rise above the town, a former Benedictine priory church with medieval stonework and memorials. The quiet, green close around it makes a peaceful place to sit.

The cathedral's current north and south entrances are not easy for people with mobility problems, so a carer should ring ahead to ask about the best way in.

National Park Visitor Centre

The National Park Visitor Centre on Mynydd Illtud common near Brecon has wide views of the central Beacons, with exhibits on local wildlife, maps and guides, a craft shop and a café. It is open all year.

There is a disabled toilet just outside the main building, a Changing Places toilet and a café, so someone who cannot walk far can still enjoy the mountain views from the centre.

Tretower Court and Castle

Tretower is a rare pair of buildings near Crickhowell: a round Norman tower with walls nine feet thick, and a later medieval manor house with a courtyard and recreated 15th-century garden. Cadw looks after both.

There are visitor toilets on site, but getting into the castle means stepping over a low historic stone threshold, and the café is closed for now, so bring a flask.

Market town · Hay on Wye

Hay-on-Wye

Hay-on-Wye is a small market town on the Welsh border beside the River Wye, famous for its many second-hand bookshops and its literary festival. Its narrow streets also hold antique shops, cafés and a castle at the top of the town.

The town is compact, so a carer can plan a short browse of a few bookshops close to the main car park and a stop in a café.

Elan Valley

The Elan Valley west of Rhayader is a chain of Victorian reservoirs and stone dams set among the hills of mid Wales. The visitor centre by the Caban Coch dam has information, bike hire and ranger-led tours, including inside Pen y Garreg dam.

There is ample parking at the visitor centre and at every dam, so a carer can drive between the dams and enjoy the views with very little walking.

Gigrin Farm Red Kite Feeding Centre

Gigrin Farm on the edge of Rhayader is a working farm where hundreds of red kites gather at the daily afternoon feed, watched from hides a short distance away. There is also a coffee shop and gift shop in the farmyard.

Three of the hides have ramps for wheelchairs, visitors with mobility issues can park next to the hides on request, and there is a disabled toilet in the farmyard.

Lake Vyrnwy

Lake Vyrnwy is a Victorian reservoir in the Berwyn hills, with a grand stone dam and a gothic straining tower that looks like a castle in the water. The surrounding RSPB reserve is open all year, with woodland, moorland and birdwatching.

There is an accessible toilet next to the main toilet block at the end of the dam, and the road across the dam gives lake views for someone who cannot walk far.
