Valentines Mansion is a restored late 17th-century house in Valentines Park, with period furnished rooms to explore and gardens beside it. It opens to the public twice a week.

The Gardener's Cottage Café sits right by the mansion, so your parent can see a few rooms and the gardens and then sit down without moving far.

Valentines Park

Valentines Park is Redbridge's largest green space, with a boating lake where rowing boats can be hired, formal gardens around Valentines Mansion, a bandstand and two cafés. It is a short walk from Gants Hill and Ilford.

With a café by the bandstand and another by the mansion, a carer can plan a short circuit of the lake and gardens with a rest at either end.

Redbridge Museum

Redbridge Museum on the second floor of Ilford's Central Library explores 200,000 years of local history in Ilford, Wanstead, Woodford and the rest of the borough, in a recently refreshed permanent exhibition. The Heritage Centre alongside holds free local and family history resources.

It is a small museum in the town centre that can be seen in under an hour, and the library around it offers seating and a quiet place to rest.

Hainault Forest Country Park

Hainault Forest Country Park is a remnant of an ancient royal forest, with woodland, open grassland and a lake where boats can be hired. Foxburrows Farm has sheep, pigs, goats, alpacas and Shetland ponies, and a café in a restored 1856 barn.

The farm and café are close together, so your parent can see the animals and have lunch without having to walk into the forest.

Wanstead Park

Wanstead Park is what remains of the grand landscape around the lost Wanstead House, with ornamental lakes, woodland and the Temple, an 18th-century folly now used as a visitor centre with exhibitions. Chalet Wood is carpeted with bluebells in spring.

A small disabled car park sits next to the Temple off Warren Road, so your parent can start close to the visitor centre and the lakeside paths.

Claybury Woods and Park covers about 70 hectares, including ancient oak and hornbeam woodland known for its bluebells, veteran trees and fungi, with meadows and wildlife ponds around it. It is managed for nature conservation.

Elmhurst Gardens is a small park in South Woodford with many mature trees that give strong autumn colour, a bowling green and a newly landscaped resting area planted with shrubs and bulbs.

Ilford War Memorial Gardens were created in the early 1920s from a public appeal as a memorial to local people lost in the First World War, and are looked after with help from a local action group. They are a peaceful formal garden close to the town centre.
