Paisley Abbey was founded in 1163 and is still a working parish church, with fine medieval stonework, stained glass and the tomb of Marjorie Bruce, daughter of Robert the Bruce. The abbey has a shop and café and runs guided tours.

The abbey, shop and café are open Monday to Saturday in the town centre, so a carer can plan a short visit with a cup of tea under the same roof.

Castle Semple Visitor Centre

Castle Semple is the main visitor centre of Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, on the shore of Castle Semple Loch at the edge of Lochwinnoch. A lochshore trail runs along the water into Parkhill Woods, and the centre has a café.

The café sits at the start of the lochshore path, so a carer can plan a short, level stretch by the water and come back for lunch.

Gleniffer Braes Country Park

Gleniffer Braes Country Park rises on the southern edge of Paisley, with woodland and open moor, the Craigielinn waterfall and views over the Clyde valley. Walking routes of different lengths start from the car parks on Glenfield Road.

Path surfaces range from tarmac to mud with some steep slopes and steps, so for an older visitor the views from near the car parks are the easiest part.

Barshaw Park is a large Victorian park on the east side of Paisley, with a walled garden looked after by the Friends of Barshaw Park, a model boating pond and open lawns. It is close to the Glasgow Road bus routes.

The walled garden is sheltered and compact, so a carer can plan a gentle walk there and past the pond with a rest on a bench.

Finlaystone is a country estate above the Clyde at Langbank, with a historic mansion, walled gardens, woodland and forest trails. It also has a café, a visitor centre, a gift shop and an animal ark.

Renfrew Museum is a small museum inside Renfrew Town Hall telling the story of the former Royal Burgh from medieval times to today, using objects, pictures, film and audio. The town hall itself is a grand Victorian building with a tall spire.

Kilbarchan is an old weaving village west of Johnstone, with narrow streets, a steeple building of 1755 holding a statue of the piper Habbie Simpson, and the National Trust for Scotland's Weaver's Cottage. The village has pubs close to the steeple.
