Market town · Yarm

Yarm High Street

Yarm is an old market town in a loop of the River Tees, with a wide cobbled high street of independent shops, cafés and restaurants and a tall railway viaduct across the river. It won a Rising Star award at the Great British High Street awards in 2020.

Parts of the high street are cobbled, so a carer may want to keep to the smoother pavements and plan a stop in one of the many cafés.

Wynyard Woodland Park

Wynyard Woodland Park follows a former railway line for over three miles from Thorpe Thewles, with the old station platform and coal drops, ancient woodland and more than ten miles of paths. The Station House Tea Room is on site.

The main path follows the old railway line, which tends to be gentle, and the tea room by the old station makes a good place to start and finish.

Nature reserve · Stockton on Tees

Tees Barrage

The Tees Barrage controls the river between Stockton and Thornaby, and beside it is an international white water course where you can watch rafters and canoeists tackle the rapids. The centre also runs family rafting, powerboat trips and paddleboarding for anyone who wants to try it.

Watching the white water from the side of the course needs little walking, and a carer can park at the course car park and stay close to the car.
