Dyffryn Gardens near St Nicholas is an Edwardian garden looked after by the National Trust, with formal lawns, themed garden rooms, an arboretum and a glasshouse, around a Victorian mansion. There is a café, shops and picnic areas.

Cosmeston Lakes Country Park

Cosmeston Lakes Country Park on the edge of Penarth has two lakes in former quarries, surrounded by woodland, meadows and wetland that attract swans, ducks and grebes. The park is open all year and has a café.

The park was designed so people of all abilities can enjoy it, the car park is tarmac with ramps to the café and toilets, and there is a disabled toilet open at all times with a radar key.

Porthkerry Country Park

Porthkerry Country Park covers 220 acres of woods and meadow in a sheltered valley at the western end of Barry, leading down to a pebble beach below cliffs and the tall railway viaduct. There are nature trails, picnic sites and a café.

The main car park has three disabled spaces and ramps to the café and toilets, and a tarmac path and boardwalk to the beach are both wheelchair accessible.

Barry Island and Whitmore Bay

Barry Island has drawn visitors since the 1870s to Whitmore Bay's sandy beach, now backed by a refurbished promenade with cafés, beach huts, gardens and the pleasure park. Beach wheelchairs can be borrowed.

The promenade runs the whole length of the beach with cafés along it, so a parent can enjoy the seaside on a level walk, and beach wheelchairs are available to loan.

Penarth Pier looks out over the Severn estuary from the town's Victorian esplanade, with a refurbished 1929 art deco Pavilion at its entrance. The Pavilion hosts exhibitions, film screenings, music and theatre.

The esplanade and pier are a classic short seaside stroll, and the Pavilion at the landward end gives shelter and a place to sit.

Cowbridge Physic Garden is a small walled garden in the centre of the market town, laid out with formal paths and beds of medicinal and useful plants. Cowbridge's high street, with its independent shops and cafés, is a few steps away.

Nash Point on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast has dramatic layered cliffs, a bedrock beach full of fossils and rock pools, and a working lighthouse on the clifftop. A café by the car park serves Welsh cakes and drinks.

The clifftop views and the café are close to the car park, so a parent can enjoy the coast without going down to the beach.

St Illtud's Church in Llantwit Major stands on the site of a church and place of learning founded around 500 AD, and has been called the Westminster of Wales. The restored Galilee Chapel houses a collection of Celtic crosses and carved stones.

The church and chapel are compact, so a carer can plan a short visit with a sit-down in the pews and lunch in the old town afterwards.

Ogmore Castle

Ogmore Castle is a Norman castle ruin beside the River Ewenny, looked after by Cadw, with a series of old stepping stones crossing the river in front of it. It is free to visit and sits among fields near Ogmore-by-Sea.

Most of the site is flat and can be seen from ground level, with parking by the river, though the car park can flood at high tide and the stepping stones are best avoided.
