York Minster

York Minster is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in northern Europe, known for its medieval stained glass, including the Great East Window. Visitors can see the nave, the chapter house and the undercroft, and climb the central tower for an extra charge.

Most of the building is accessible to wheelchair and mobility scooter users, with a ramped entrance from Precentor's Court, an accessible toilet and free carer tickets, although the tower climb is only by 275 steps.

The National Railway Museum holds the national collection of locomotives and rolling stock, including Mallard, royal trains and a Japanese bullet train, in huge halls next to York station. Displays cover two centuries of railway history.

Yorkshire Museum and Museum Gardens

The Yorkshire Museum displays Roman, Viking and medieval treasures and fossils, set in the Museum Gardens beside the ruins of St Mary's Abbey. The gardens are free to walk in and run down to the River Ouse.

The gardens are fully wheelchair accessible with gently sloping paths, there is free Blue Badge parking outside, a lift inside the museum and an accessible toilet on the lower ground floor.

York Castle Museum is housed in two former prisons and is famous for Kirkgate, a recreated Victorian street, as well as displays of everyday life through the centuries and the old condemned cells. Visitors can also see an exhibition on the First World War.

Seats are available throughout, there are two accessible toilets, a lift to the upper floors on one side and parking for up to three hours for Blue Badge holders outside, though the two halves are linked by stairs.

York Art Gallery on Exhibition Square shows paintings from the 14th century to the present day and the largest collection of British studio ceramics in the country. There is a garden balcony overlooking the Museum Gardens.

York City Walls

York's city walls form an elevated circular walkway around the city centre and are free to walk throughout the year. The walls show more than 2,000 years of the city's history, with medieval gateways known as bars and views of the Minster.

The walkway is reached by steps at the bars and has uneven sections, so a carer can choose a short stretch near the Minster and come down at the next bar.

Merchant Adventurers' Hall

The Merchant Adventurers' Hall is one of the finest surviving medieval guild halls in the world, built more than 660 years ago and still home to the York Merchant Adventurers Company. Visitors can see the great timbered hall, the undercroft and the chapel.

It is a short walk from the Shambles and a quieter alternative to the busiest sights, and a carer can ask about access to the lower floor when booking.

The Yorkshire Air Museum occupies a former Second World War bomber airfield at Elvington, with a Halifax bomber, historic aircraft and wartime buildings including the control tower. It is open all year with a shop and café.
