St Fagans National Museum of History

St Fagans is an open-air museum where more than forty historic buildings from all over Wales have been rebuilt, from farmhouses and a chapel to a workmen's institute and a row of miners' cottages, set in the grounds of St Fagans Castle. Craftspeople work in many of the buildings and there are indoor galleries, farm animals and gardens.

Wheelchairs can be borrowed free, there are accessible toilets at the main entrance and around the site, and a map shows a suggested route that avoids the steep ground on the castle side.

National Museum Cardiff in the civic centre holds one of the best collections of Impressionist paintings in Europe alongside Welsh art, natural history galleries and dinosaurs. It is a grand Edwardian building where you can spend an hour in one gallery or most of a day.

Cardiff Castle stands in the city centre with a Norman keep on its mound, Roman walls and a Victorian Gothic mansion decorated for the Marquess of Bute with painted ceilings and carved rooms. There is also a regimental museum, wartime shelters in the walls and a green inside the castle grounds.

There is level access to the visitor centre, café and grounds, a lift up to the roof terrace and battlement walk, and disabled toilets upstairs, though the keep and the house interiors involve steps; one carer goes in free.

Castell Coch is a Victorian fairy-tale castle on a wooded hillside above Tongwynlais, rebuilt on medieval ruins for the Marquess of Bute. Inside are richly painted rooms, including a drawing room covered in birds, butterflies and scenes from Aesop's fables.

There are three accessible parking bays at the top of the free car park, but the path to the castle has steps and most rooms are upstairs, so this suits someone who can manage stairs slowly with a carer.

Llandaff Cathedral sits in a hollow below the old village green of Llandaff, on a site used for worship for around 1,500 years. Inside, the huge concrete arch carrying Epstein's figure of Christ in Majesty stands over the nave, and there are Pre-Raphaelite windows and paintings.

There is step-free access by the Southeast door near a small car park, a wheelchair to borrow and maps of step-free routes, but the cathedral is at the bottom of a steep slope so it is best to drive down to that car park.

Roath Park is a Victorian park in the north of the city, built around a 30-acre lake with the Scott Memorial Lighthouse and rowing boats for hire. South of the lake are botanic gardens, flower beds and the Roath Park Conservatory with its tropical plants.

Bute Park stretches behind Cardiff Castle along the River Taff, with a fine tree collection, flower gardens, a visitor centre and three cafés. It is only a short walk from the main shopping streets and civic centre.

The Cardiff Bay Barrage is a mile-long embankment closing off the bay from the Severn Estuary, with views back over the bay and out to Flat Holm and the Devon coast on a clear day. You can watch boats pass through the locks and there are play areas and public toilets along the way.

The embankment is flat with no steps, so it suits a wheelchair or a slow walk, and a carer can go as far as is comfortable and come back.

Forest Farm Country Park

Forest Farm is a nature reserve on the banks of the Taff at Whitchurch, with the last surviving stretch of the 1790s Glamorganshire Canal, woodland, meadows and ponds. It is one of the best places in the UK to see kingfishers, and the restored Melingriffith water pump stands at its southern end.

There are no public toilets except on event days, so a carer should plan a short canal-side walk from the car park and stop somewhere else for a break.
