Ruthin Craft Centre is a centre for contemporary applied art, with three galleries of changing exhibitions, makers' studios around a courtyard, a retail gallery and a café. Entry and parking are both free.

Llangollen Railway

Llangollen Railway runs heritage steam and diesel trains for ten miles along the Dee valley from Llangollen to Corwen, stopping at Berwyn, Glyndyfrdwy and Carrog. The ride follows the river through wooded hills, and there is a café at Llangollen station.

Llangollen and Corwen stations are fully accessible with ramps where needed and each train has wheelchair spaces, so a parent can enjoy the valley from a seat.

Llangollen is a small town on the River Dee with an old stone bridge, riverside cafés and the Llangollen Canal running along the hillside above. The canal is part of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site, and narrowboats pass along it through the summer.

The towpath from Llangollen is a level route beside the water, so a carer can plan a short, flat stroll followed by a café stop in town.

Valle Crucis Abbey

Valle Crucis is the ruin of a 13th-century Cistercian abbey in a quiet valley just outside Llangollen, looked after by Cadw. Its west front with a rose window, the chapter house and the monks' fishpond survive.

The grounds have firm, level paths and wheelchair access is available, with picnic benches for a rest.

Denbigh Castle was built by Edward I's commander Henry de Lacy on a hill above Denbigh, and its great triple-towered gatehouse still stands. A visitor centre explains the castle's history, and the walls give views over the Vale of Clwyd.

There is one dedicated accessible parking space beside the castle and toilets in the visitor centre, but gravel and cobbles make parts of the site uneven, so the carer should plan to stay on the lower level.

Rhuddlan Castle is a concentric castle built by Edward I beside the River Clwyd, with twin-towered gatehouses and a dock that once let ships sail up from the sea. It is looked after by Cadw and has on-site parking.

St Asaph Cathedral is the smallest ancient cathedral in Britain and has been a place of worship for more than 1,400 years, with a memorial to the translators of the Welsh Bible. It is open every day, and the Translators' Tearoom serves light lunches and cakes from Monday to Saturday.

Loggerheads Country Park lies in a limestone gorge of the River Alyn on the road between Mold and Ruthin, with woodland walks below the cliffs and an old mill. There is a visitor centre and a café in the park.

The Riverside Trail is an all-ability circular route of about half a mile that takes 20 to 30 minutes, which suits a parent who wants a short, gentle walk.

Prestatyn's seafront looks out over a long sandy beach towards the wind farms in Liverpool Bay, with the Wales Coast Path running west to Rhyl. The Denbighshire stretch of the path runs for about seven miles between Gronant and Rhyl, passing Barkby Beach on the way.

Between Gronant and Rhyl the mapped route follows a smooth tarmac and concrete surface, so a parent can manage a short seafront stretch and turn back when ready.
