Pontsticill Reservoir fills the Taf Fechan valley below the Brecon Beacons, with the bell-mouth spillway known locally as The Cup. The Taff Trail passes in front of the dam and Pontsticill station on the Brecon Mountain Railway is close by.

The views can be enjoyed from the dam area without a long walk, and a carer can combine a visit with the railway's lakeside café at Pontsticill station.

Parc Taf Bargoed

Parc Taf Bargoed is a 140-hectare country park created on the site of three former collieries in the Taff Bargoed valley, with lakes, meadows and walking routes. The Glo Ddu pavilion is the base for the park warden, who runs wildlife walks.

The park has four waymarked family walks of different lengths, so a carer can pick the shortest loop and check routes with the warden beforehand.

Merthyr Tydfil Town Centre

Merthyr Tydfil was once one of the most important iron-making towns in the world, and its centre mixes historic streets with independent shops, cafés and restaurants. Pontmorlais, the heritage quarter, has the old Crown Inn and Theatr Soar.

The main attractions are within easy walking distance of each other, so a carer can plan a short browse and a café stop close to parking.
