Kirkleatham Museum

Kirkleatham Museum is housed in a Queen Anne building of 1709 near Redcar, with collections on local history, the steel industry and the area's Saxon princess burial, plus changing exhibitions. It is open Tuesday to Sunday and admission is free.

The council says the museum's three floors are completely accessible for wheelchair users, and the grounds and the walled garden next door make it easy to add a gentle stroll.

Redcar has a long stretch of wide golden sand and a promenade, with the 80ft Redcar Beacon on the seafront giving 360 degree views along the coast. The Zetland Lifeboat Museum, home of the oldest surviving lifeboat in the world, is nearby.

The Beacon is reached by a ramp and has a lift to the top, and accessible and Changing Places toilets on the seafront are free to use.

Locke Park in Redcar has a boating lake, formal gardens, tennis courts and a children's play area. It is a traditional town park a short way inland from the seafront.

Saltburn's Grade II listed Victorian pier is 208 metres long, the last surviving pleasure pier in Yorkshire, and runs out from a Blue Flag beach below Huntcliff. The Lower Prom has cafés and amusements, and the town above has Victorian streets and independent shops.

The pier and Lower Prom are flat, accessible and Changing Places toilets on the seafront are free, and the cliff tramway saves the climb back up to the town.

Saltburn Valley Gardens

Saltburn's Valley Gardens run down a wooded valley to the sea, with colourful formal displays, Italian gardens, a woodland centre and tea rooms. The Saltburn Miniature Railway runs through the valley from April to October.

The Italian gardens and tea rooms are in the lower part of the valley, so a carer can stay on the gentler paths and avoid the steep grassy banks.

Guisborough is a historic market town at the edge of the North York Moors, the ancient capital of Cleveland, with a regular market, shops and cafés along its wide main street. The ruins of the 12th century Gisborough Priory stand at the end of the town.
