Rhondda Heritage Park

Rhondda Heritage Park at Trehafod is a museum of Welsh coal mining in the buildings of the former Lewis Merthyr Colliery, with exhibitions, the Black Gold underground tour led by former miners, and Caffe Bracchi. The tour lasts up to 90 minutes and tells the story of the Rhondda valleys through the miners' own memories.

There is ample on-site parking with disabled spaces and disabled access, and the exhibitions and café can be enjoyed by anyone who would rather not take the underground tour.

The Royal Mint Experience

The Royal Mint Experience at Llantrisant is the visitor centre of the Royal Mint, the only place where UK coins are made, with interactive exhibits, a behind-the-scenes look at the production area and the chance to strike your own coin. Autism friendly tours with smaller groups are also offered.

Ynysangharad War Memorial Park

Ynysangharad War Memorial Park is a large park in the centre of Pontypridd, home to the restored National Lido of Wales, a memorial to the Welsh national anthem and a stretch of the Taff Trail. Caffi Lido serves breakfasts, waffles and snacks.

The park is easy to reach by car, bus or train and the café is by the lido, so a carer can plan a gentle stroll with a sit-down at Caffi Lido.

Aberdare Park is a Victorian park a few minutes' walk from the town centre, with a boating lake, an ornate fountain, rhododendron-lined paths and a Gorsedd stone circle from the 1956 National Eisteddfod. A café overlooks the boating lake.

Barry Sidings Countryside Park near Trehafod sits on the old tramline that carried coal from the Lewis Merthyr Colliery, with lakes, open grassland, woodland walks and cycling trails. The Barry Sidings Café serves hot food and drinks.

Cwm Clydach Country Park in Clydach Vale has two lakes, a waterfall and trails on the site of the former Cambrian Colliery, with ducks to feed and birds including kingfishers. The Cambrian Lakeside Café has free parking beside it.

A circular route goes round the lower lake with benches and fishing platforms along the way, and the café is at the start, so a carer can plan a short loop with rests.
