I'm based in Milton Keynes and my work is mostly live-in and overnight care, staying close through the night and settling into the rhythm of a household over days rather than snatched visits. I find I do my best work this way, building the kind of trust that lets someone hand over the more personal parts of their care without feeling rushed. One evening a gentleman I looked after grew agitated, pacing the hallway with nowhere to settle. Rather than steer him back to his room, I matched his pace and softly hummed one of his favourite big band tunes. He stopped, hummed along, and we sat by the window while he told me, in vivid detail, how he'd proposed to his wife on a nearby pier. Moments like that remind me why I value patience over instruction. Over six years I've supported people living with dementia, learning disabilities, autism, Down's syndrome and declining mobility, along with catheter and PEG feeding, hoist use, wound dressing and end of life care. I speak English, Shona and Makaton, and I'm comfortable with the practical, hands on side of caring as well as the quieter, companionable side. I am calm, warm, friendly and dedicated to my job. A good listener who respects people’s privacy and dignity. I love engaging with the people I support in different ways like, chatting about various topics, drinking tea or lunch/snacks together, walking about in the park if they are able to, watching t.v together, games etc. as I feel that this is the best way to bring the best out of each other. I have worked with individuals with different backgrounds - with various support needs like: dementia, physical, mental disabilities, learning disabilities, eye sight impairment among others. I understand about personal centred care and I therefore treat everyone as individual and always allowing choices, consent as well as following each individual support plan needs in regards to their capacity without making judgements. I took care of my late mum who had cancer till her last breath. I saw the physical pains she went through and loads of medication/treatments I understand the physical, emotional, financial pains/strains that can impact the family members. I like working in a safe environment and therefore will raise concerns if there is any danger to the client and myself while at work. I know that it’s important to work together with all the support team for the best interest of the client.
