Carrickfergus Castle

Carrickfergus Castle is a Norman castle begun by John de Courcy after 1177, standing on a rock on the northern shore of Belfast Lough. Inside there are historical displays and a line of cannons from the 17th to the 19th centuries, and it served as a garrison until 1928.

The castle has a sensory room and a quiet time on Sunday mornings, and carers go free, although the towers have steps, so a carer should plan to stay in the courtyard and ground floor areas if walking is hard.

Andrew Jackson Cottage and US Rangers Museum

This reconstructed 18th century thatched cottage at Boneybefore recalls the family of Andrew Jackson, seventh President of the United States, whose parents left from here. It has an open fireplace and period furnishings, and a small museum on the US Rangers who trained in Carrickfergus in the Second World War.

Entry is free, there is free parking next to the cottage and the listing mentions toilets for disabled visitors, so it makes a short, easy visit.

Knockagh Monument

Knockagh Monument

The Knockagh Monument is a 34 metre basalt obelisk on Knockagh Hill above Greenisland, the county war memorial for Antrim and the largest in Northern Ireland. From the top of the hill there are wide views over Belfast Lough and the city.

There is on-site parking and the monument is open at all hours, so a carer can drive up and enjoy the view with only a short walk from the car.

St Nicholas' Church, Carrickfergus

St Nicholas' Church was founded in 1182 by John de Courcy, who also built the castle, and is known for its stained glass, its crooked aisle and one of the largest church monuments in Ireland. The 16th century Flemish window of John the Baptist is a highlight.

It opens to visitors from 12 to 2pm on four days a week and sits in the town centre near the castle and museum, so a carer can fit a short visit into a day in Carrickfergus.

Whitehead seafront and Blackhead Path

Whitehead is a small Victorian seaside town with brightly painted houses and a promenade along the shore of Belfast Lough. From the car park at the end of the promenade the Blackhead Coastal Path follows the rocks towards Blackhead Lighthouse, with seals and seabirds to look out for.

The path to the lighthouse climbs a steep flight of steps, so a carer should plan to stay on the level promenade near the town and turn back before the climb.
