STEAM Museum of the Great Western Railway

STEAM tells the story of the Great Western Railway and the men and women who built and ran it, in a restored building of the old Swindon railway works. Displays include famous locomotives, a recreated works floor and the history of the town that grew around the railway.

Lydiard Park is 260 acres of historic landscape with lawns, woodland and lakes around Lydiard House, the Palladian home of the St John family, which opens as a museum on set days. There is a restored walled garden, the Forest Café and the Coach House tea rooms.

Swindon and Cricklade Railway

The Swindon and Cricklade Railway is a volunteer-run heritage line rebuilt on the old Midland and South Western Junction route, with steam and diesel trains. Blunsdon station has the Whistle Stop Café, a shop and picnic area, and Hayes Knoll has the engine shed.

The car park and main areas are on flat ground, there are ramps to platforms and the café, wheelchair-accessible toilets at Blunsdon and Hayes Knoll, and an adapted carriage with space for wheelchairs.

Coate Water Country Park

Coate Water is a country park and local nature reserve on the south-east edge of Swindon, built around the largest body of still water in Wiltshire with reedbeds, meadows and woodland. The writer Richard Jefferies grew up at the farmhouse next to it.

A path runs around the lake and there are regular buses from the town centre, so a carer can plan a short stretch by the water rather than the full circuit.

Town Gardens is a Victorian park in Swindon's Old Town, set in a former quarry, with formal flower beds, a bandstand and the Old Town Bowl, an open-air concert venue opened in 1936. Summer concerts are held in the Bowl.

It is a compact, sheltered park close to the cafés of Old Town, so a carer can plan a short walk round the flower beds and a sit on a bench.

Barbury Castle is an Iron Age hillfort on the Marlborough Downs south of Swindon, with double ramparts and the Ridgeway running past it. The country park around it has wide views across north Wiltshire.
