Food, yes. A live-in carer eats with the person they care for, so budget £5 to £10 a day on the weekly shop. Travel is only chargeable if you agree it in advance and in writing, with the rate and the circumstances written down; 55p a mile is the usual figure when a carer drives your relative in their own car. Sometimes, and it is worth asking before you assume not. In England the council contributes once savings fall below £23,250, after a care needs assessment and a financial assessment.
