The short answer
- Bank holidays are one and a half times your rateThe contract between you and each client charges every bank holiday at one and a half times your normal rate, and Christmas Day at twice. Weekends carry no uplift.
- The extra reaches you in the same proportionOur commission is charged on the uplifted figure. A £20 hour on a bank holiday is £30, and £24 of it reaches you.
- Two things are not set out, so agree them in writingThe contract does not say which day carries the uplift when Christmas Day or Boxing Day falls at a weekend, or how the uplift applies to a weekly live-in rate.
- Check the booking before the billing dayInvoices are built from the bookings you and the client enter. Make sure a holiday visit shows the right rate before your client is billed.
Rates are what carers on PrimeCarers advertise, with our fee included. Bank holiday dates are for England and Wales, from gov.uk, checked 22 September 2026.
What the contract says
Bank holidays are one and a half times your rate, and Christmas Day is twice
Every booking made through PrimeCarers sits under the same contract between you and your client. Its fee clause is one sentence long on this subject, and it applies whatever rate you set.
The clause reads: "Bank holidays will be charged at one and a half times the carer's normal rate, and Christmas day will be charged at 2 times the carer's normal rate." You can read it in the client and carer contract, and the rest of the pay guides are in carer resources. New Year's Day is a bank holiday like any other under it, so it is one and a half times, not twice. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are not bank holidays, so they are your normal rate. The contract says nothing about weekends or evenings, so a Saturday or a late call is charged at your normal rate.
Our commission comes out of the uplifted figure in the same way it comes out of your normal rate: 20% on hourly visits of less than six hours and 15% on a single visit of six hours or more. So the extra reaches you in the same proportion as the rest of your rate. What carers earn on PrimeCarers sets out the commission in full.

Because the uplift is in the contract, the family has agreed to it before the day comes. What families are told is on the weekend, evening and bank holiday rates page, and it gives them the same multipliers you are working to. Mentioning it when you agree the visits still saves a surprised message when the invoice arrives.
The dates ahead
The bank holidays from Christmas 2026 to New Year 2028
These are the England and Wales bank holidays gov.uk lists for the next fifteen months. Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, so its rate is clear. Boxing Day 2026, and all three holidays over Christmas and New Year 2027, fall at a weekend, which is where the contract stops giving an answer.

Dates are England and Wales bank holidays from gov.uk, checked 22 September 2026. Prices use a £20 hour, a typical rate carers on PrimeCarers advertise with our fee included, and our 20% commission on hourly visits, charged on the uplifted figure. The multiplier applies to your own rate, whatever it is.
When a bank holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, gov.uk says a substitute weekday becomes a bank holiday instead, normally the following Monday. That is why the gov.uk bank holidays page lists Monday 28 December 2026 as the Boxing Day bank holiday. The contract uses the words "bank holidays" and "Christmas day" without saying whether it means the calendar date or the substitute day, so the rows marked "Agree it" are left without a price.
Scotland and Northern Ireland have different bank holidays. Scotland has 2 January and St Andrew's Day and no Easter Monday, and Northern Ireland has St Patrick's Day and 12 July. The contract does not say which calendar it follows, so if you work outside England and Wales, agree with the client which days count.
What to agree
What the contract does not settle, and how to agree it
The contract is clear on the multiplier and silent on a few details around it. None of them has a published answer, so the only safe course is to agree each one with the client in writing before the day, and to keep that message.

The contract says any communication under it is to be in writing, by email, WhatsApp or the messaging on the PrimeCarers platform, and that variations are confirmed in writing. A message through the platform, sent when you agree the Christmas visits and answered by the client, gives you both the same version to point to in January. Put the dates, the times and the rate for each day in one message.
For live-in work the question comes up whenever a placement runs over a bank holiday, not only at Christmas. What to agree before a live-in placement has a checklist for the first conversation, and live-in carer pay, from your side covers the weekly rate itself.
Working or taking time off
Working the holidays is your choice, but an accepted visit is a commitment
You choose your clients and the work you take, and nothing in the contract obliges you to offer extra days. Once you have accepted a contract, though, you are bound to deliver it, so the time to decide about Christmas is before you agree the dates.
What the terms say about the common situations
- You want Christmas Day off
- The carer terms say you negotiate any time off with the client. Raise it early, and agree the change in writing.
- You send somebody in your place
- The contract lets you send a suitably qualified substitute, subject to reasonable objection from the client. You arrange and pay them yourself.
- You want to charge the normal rate
- A waiver of any part of the contract only takes effect if you and the client both agree it in writing.
- You want more for weekends
- Weekends carry no uplift. Your rate cannot change part way through a contract; a new rate needs a new contract with that client.
- The client cancels a holiday visit
- A visit the client cancels is payable in full, except for unplanned hospitalisation, illness or another reason you both agree. You may waive part or all of it.
The time-off and rate rules come from the carer terms of service, and the rest from the contract. Notice under the contract is 48 hours for hourly care, and seven days for live-in care once 168 hours have been worked (48 hours before that). It applies to ending the arrangement, but it is a sensible guide for holiday changes too, and a family arranging cover for Christmas needs far more than two days. Holiday pay, sick pay and pensions when self-employed covers planning time off you are not paid for.
An employed care worker is in a different position. Gov.uk says bank holidays do not have to be given as paid leave, and an employer can count them as part of the 5.6 weeks of statutory holiday. Self-employed, you have no paid leave, but the uplift is written into every contract you sign.
If you are not yet working through PrimeCarers, you can register as a carer on PrimeCarers and set your own rate, and the uplift applies to whatever rate you set. To see what is being advertised first, see the carer jobs open near you.
Getting it paid
Making sure the uplift is on the invoice
The contract says invoices are compiled from the information you and the client enter on the platform, and that PrimeCarers does not produce, validate or verify their content. You and the client are jointly responsible for the bookings being right before the invoice is issued.
- 1
Agree the holiday dates in writing
October or NovemberWhich days you are working, the times, and the rate for each day, including any weekend date the contract does not settle. - 2
Check each holiday booking
Before the billing dayLook at the visit on your schedule and make sure the rate on it matches what you agreed. The invoice is built from the booking as it stands on your client’s billing day. - 3
Correct anything that is wrong with the client
As soon as you noticeIf a booking is wrong, agree the correction with the client and update the booking. The contract leaves disagreements about charges to the two of you. - 4
Raise it with PrimeCarers if you cannot agree
Within 10 working daysThe carer terms say an issue must be raised within 10 working days of the incident. Payments may be held while the two of you clarify a dispute.
When the money arrives follows your client's billing, so there is no single payday, and a bank holiday week can move the date. How carers get paid on PrimeCarers explains the route, and your Payments page shows the expected date for each client.
Questions
Questions carers ask about bank holiday and Christmas pay
Yes. The contract between you and each client charges bank holidays at one and a half times your normal rate and Christmas Day at twice. At £20 an hour, a bank holiday hour is £30 and £24 reaches you after our 20% commission.
No. Boxing Day is a bank holiday, so it is one and a half times your rate. Only Christmas Day is twice. In 2026 Boxing Day falls on a Saturday and gov.uk lists Monday 28 December as the bank holiday, and the contract does not say which of the two carries the uplift, so agree it with your client in writing.
It does in 2027, on a Saturday, with Monday 27 December as the substitute bank holiday. The contract does not say whether the 25th or the Monday is charged at twice your rate. That is not set out anywhere published, so agree it with the client in writing before the dates are booked.
The contract sets the multipliers, but how they apply to a weekly live-in rate is not published. Agree with the family, in writing and before the placement starts, how a bank holiday or Christmas Day inside the placement will be charged and what the figure will be.
Yes, in the same proportion as the rest. Commission is charged on the uplifted figure, so on a Christmas Day hour at £20 the client pays £40 and £32 reaches you.
Not under the contract. It prices bank holidays and Christmas Day differently and nothing else, so a Saturday or an evening is your normal rate. If you want a higher rate for that work, it is a rate you set for new bookings, because a rate cannot change part way through a contract.
