What I like about live-in and overnight care is the chance to properly get to know someone, their routines, their little preferences, rather than just their diagnosis. I've worked this way for seven years now, based in Basildon, and I speak both English and Yoruba, which has helped me connect with clients from a range of backgrounds. Over that time I've supported people living with dementia, Parkinson's, stroke, heart disease and type 2 diabetes, as well as rheumatoid arthritis and end of life care, and I'm confident with practical needs such as hoist use and catheter care. Day to day, I take care of the essentials: help with eating and drinking, medication reminders, dressing, bathing and toileting, moving and handling, plus cooking, cleaning and laundry so the home ticks over properly. I'm just as happy sitting down for a chat, putting some music on or helping with a bit of decorating as I am with the personal care, because companionship matters just as much. Outside of work I enjoy cooking and baking, walking and reading, and I try to bring that same steady, homely warmth into the households I support. If that sounds like the kind of support you're looking for, I would be glad to hear from you.
