I once arrived at a client's home to find her gasping for air. I called an ambulance straight away, did what I could to help her breathe, and stayed close, talking calmly to her so she wouldn't panic, until the paramedics arrived. That instinct to stay steady and present is something I bring to every visit, whether the moment is an emergency or just an ordinary afternoon that needs a bit of company. Over seven years of hourly visiting care, I've supported people through dementia, stroke, Parkinson's, heart disease, cancer and end of life care, as well as helping with mobility, bathing, catheter care, hoist use and medication. I first learned to care for someone properly as a young girl, looking after my grandmother, and that early experience still shapes how I work now, with patience and attention to the small things. I speak English and Somali, and I take real pride in person-centred care. With one client who'd lost her mobility and her spirits along with it, I made time beyond the basics, sitting with her, listening, encouraging short walks and conversation, and keeping her family in the loop. Based in Oldham, I offer hourly, live-in and overnight care, and in three years of professional care work I have supported people with dementia, Parkinson's, strokes, heart disease and respiratory illness, as well as those living with learning disabilities, anxiety and depression. I am just as ready to sit and talk over a cup of tea or keep someone company on a gentle walk, and I try to bring a calm, steady presence whether I am helping with personal care or simply keeping someone safe overnight. Outside of work I enjoy cooking, yoga and reading, and I think that balance helps me stay patient and present with the people I care for. I am a compassionate carer I have been working as a carer for 10 years I pride my self on being able to quickly learn new skills and adapt to any situation.
