Park · Brynmenyn

Bryngarw Country Park

Bryngarw Country Park sits at the mouth of the Garw Valley north of Bridgend, with woodland, meadows, lakes and a Japanese garden around Bryngarw House. There is a visitor centre and a café by the car park, and ducks to feed on the lake.

There are five disabled parking spaces and Blue Badge holders can use any space in the car park, with the café and toilets a short way from the cars, so a carer can plan a lakeside stroll and a sit-down.

Parc Slip Nature Reserve

Parc Slip is a Wildlife Trust nature reserve on a former opencast coal site near Aberkenfig, now wetlands, grassland and woodland with bird hides and ponds. The visitor centre has a café and there are several kilometres of traffic-free tracks.

The reserve has accessible paths for wheelchairs and walking sticks and the visitor centre has an accessible toilet and a café, so a carer can keep to a short, firm route near the centre.

Kenfig National Nature Reserve

Kenfig is one of the largest sand dune systems in Wales, with Kenfig Pool, a large natural freshwater lake, at its heart and bird hides along the shore. Paths lead from the visitor centre through the dunes towards the sea and the buried medieval town of Kenfig.

The listing notes level access and disabled parking at the car park, and toilets are open in office hours, so a carer can keep to the paths near the centre rather than the soft sand of the dunes.

Porthcawl seafront and Rest Bay

Porthcawl's promenade runs along the seafront past the harbour and lighthouse, with cafés, benches and views across the Bristol Channel. A path continues round the coast to Rest Bay, a wide sandy beach popular with surfers.

Visit Wales describes plenty of benches along the promenade and accessible parking and toilets at Rest Bay, so a carer can choose a short level stretch and park close to it.

Castle · Bridgend

Newcastle Castle, Bridgend

Newcastle Castle stands on a hill above the River Ogmore in Bridgend town, and is known for its finely carved Norman gateway. It is a small, free Cadw site with views over the town.

There are eight stone steps without a handrail up into the castle and parking is on nearby streets, so it suits a parent who can manage a few steps with a carer's arm, as a short stop rather than a full outing.

Maesteg Town Hall

Maesteg Town Hall is a Grade II listed Victorian building in the centre of the Llynfi Valley town, reopened in 2024 after a major restoration. It now holds a library and local heritage centre, a studio theatre and cinema, a restored main hall and a café.

The café, library and heritage displays are under one roof in the town centre, so a carer can plan a short, warm indoor visit with a cup of tea, and it is worth ringing ahead about the lift and toilets.

Museum · Porthcawl

Porthcawl Museum

Porthcawl Museum is a volunteer-run local history museum in the town's old police station on John Street. Its displays cover the town's growth as a port and seaside resort, with photographs, maps and everyday objects.

It is a small museum in the town centre that opens on a few days each week, so a carer can combine a short visit with the nearby shops and seafront and should check the days before going.
