The cost

What respite costs in Aberdeen

Every kind of respite in Aberdeen, by the day and by the week: carers on PrimeCarers, local agencies where enough of them publish a rate, and care homes.

What respite costs in Aberdeen, per day and per week
Type of respitePer dayPer week
A live-in carer at homeone carer living in, day and night: what live-in carers within reach advertise, with our fee included£148£1,036
Visits of 2 hours a dayat £20 an hour, the middle of what carers near you advertise, with our fee included£40£280
A carer sleeping in overnightthe usual range for a sleeping night on PrimeCarers, with our fee included; a waking night is about £165 to £250£160 to £190a night£1,120 to £1,330
A care home place (standard residential fee)a typical weekly fee for a residential place across the UK, because too few homes near you publish one. It is not a respite price; a short stay can be priced higher£166£1,160

Shaded rows are carers on PrimeCarers, priced with our fee included. The other rows are what agencies and care homes publish, read from the source given in each row. A day of live-in cover is the weekly figure divided by seven.

Which line applies depends on the kind of break. If you are going away, somebody needs to be with the person you look after day and night, so the comparison is a live-in carer at about £1,036 a week against a care home place at £1,160. If you are staying at home and need time to sleep, rest or get out, visits cost far less, and a single overnight is priced by the night.

We do not have enough published respite prices from care homes near you to quote one, so the care home line is the standard residential fee. Homes can price a short respite stay above their long-stay rate, so ask each one what a stay of your length would cost.

A couple can share one live-in carer. On PrimeCarers that is about £1,350 a week for two people, where a care home charges for two places. Bank holidays are charged at one and a half times the carer's normal rate and Christmas Day at twice the rate, so a break over Christmas or Easter costs a little more. Travel is only charged if you agree it with the carer in advance and in writing.

How respite costs compare across the country sets these figures against the national picture, and how to fund respite covers who can help pay, starting with a carer's assessment from the council.

If you only need a few hours

Not every break is a fortnight away. If you are staying local and just need to sleep, see friends or get to your own appointments, visiting care is the cheaper shape: 14 hours a week at £20 an hour is £280 a week.

This is deliberately not in the table above. A few hours a day and a carer living in the house are different things, and putting them on one list would make the cheaper one look like the same purchase.

The decision

Cover at home, or a short stay in a care home?

On price alone a short care home stay is cheaper in Aberdeen, so it deserves a proper look. Here is what the fee does not cover.

A carer at home

A short stay in a care home

Who comes

You read profiles, talk to two or three, and pick one. You meet them before the first day.

The home allocates staff on shift. You will not know in advance who is on.

If there are two of you

One live-in carer can look after a couple, at about £1,350 a week for the two of them.

Two residents, two fees, and not always rooms next to each other.

What moves

Nothing. Same bed, same kitchen, same routine, same neighbours.

Packing, a move each way, and a fortnight of settling into a building they do not know.

How long you can book

A weekend upwards. You set the dates.

A home can set a minimum stay, so ask what it is before you book.

What it includes

Personal care, meals, medication prompts, the house kept going, company.

Room, meals and staff on site. Ask what is billed on top, such as hairdressing and outings.

None of this makes a care home the wrong answer in Aberdeen. Where someone needs several staff to move them safely, or nursing overnight, a home is the better place to be for a fortnight. It is the rest of the time that this table is about.

A couple can share one carer. One live-in carer can look after a husband and wife, at about £1,350 a week for the two of them on PrimeCarers. A care home charges for two places.

Nothing has to move. A fortnight away means packing, settling into an unfamiliar building and coming home again. For someone with dementia the disruption can matter more than the fee, because a new place and a change of routine can be confusing and distressing.

You can start smaller than you think. Respite does not have to be a fortnight. A weekend, or a few hours twice a week so you can sleep or see friends, can be enough to keep you going.

A care home is the better answer for some breaks, particularly when someone needs several staff to move them safely or nursing through the night. Care at home or a care home puts the two side by side, and respite at home or in a care home covers this choice on its own.

For a break of a week or more, a live-in carer covers the whole day: live-in care in Aberdeen shows the carers and typical rates here, and private carers in Aberdeen covers visits by the hour.

How it works

Booking cover, step by step

  1. Tell us the dates and what is needed. A week, a fortnight, a weekend, or regular hours. It takes a few minutes and costs nothing.
  2. See who is free. You get carers within reach of you, with their photos, rates, experience and reviews. Every carer has passed ID and right to work checks, has an enhanced DBS check (PVG in Scotland, Access NI in Northern Ireland) issued within the last 2 years, and has had an online interview with us. We do not check qualifications, training or references, and the reviews and references on a profile are shown as the carer collected them, unverified, so ask about skills and training when you talk.
  3. Talk to a few. Message or call your shortlist through the site. It is worth speaking to two or three before deciding, and there is no charge for any of it.
  4. Agree the details in writing. Dates, hours, what the job involves, the rate and anything specific like medication or a night routine. Do this before you go, not on the doorstep.
  5. Book, and go. You pay through us, so visits are covered by the carer insurance policy we arrange, within its terms (no clinical procedures), and you have a record of everything agreed.

Questions

Questions families in Aberdeen ask about respite

It depends on the kind of respite. A live-in carer who stays in the house costs about £148 a day, or £1,036 a week, in Aberdeen. Visits of two hours a day at around £20 an hour come to £40 a day, or £280 a week. A carer sleeping in overnight is £160 to £190 a night. For a care home, the standard residential fee across the UK is about £1,160 a week, and a short respite stay can be priced higher. How respite costs compare across the country puts these beside the national figures.

For a live-in carer who stays in the house, a week is typically £1,036 in Aberdeen, so a fortnight is about £2,072. For daily visits instead, carers here advertise around £20 an hour, so two hours a day comes to roughly £280 a week. Nothing is charged until you book.

On the national figures, yes, though we cannot give a local care home figure because too few homes near you publish one. Nationally a care home place is around £1,160 a week against £1,120 for a live-in carer at home. A care home also charges per person, so a couple pays twice where one live-in carer covers both.

It depends on who is free. You are talking to self-employed carers directly, so there is no agency rota to wait for, and some carers can start within a few days. If your break is already in the diary, particularly over school holidays or Christmas, it is worth lining someone up now. You can message carers and agree dates before committing to anything.

Possibly. If you look after someone regularly you are entitled to a carer's assessment from your council, which is separate from any assessment of the person you care for, and it can lead to funding for a break. It is worth asking even if the person you look after pays for their own care, because the assessment is about your needs, not theirs. How to fund respite care goes through the options.

Whatever you normally do, agreed in advance and written down before you go. That can cover personal care, medication prompts, meals, keeping the house going and company, plus anything specific like a hoist or a night routine. A live-in carer sleeps in the house and is there overnight. If the person you look after is up several times a night, say so early, because that needs a waking night rather than a live-in arrangement and is priced differently.

Tell us and we will help you look for someone else, although a replacement carer cannot be guaranteed. We are an introductory service rather than an agency: we do not employ the carers and we do not run a rota, so there is no bank of staff to send. For a longer break it is sensible to line up a second carer you have already spoken to, so there is somebody who knows the situation.

Local figures on this page are read from carers' advertised rates and from the prices agencies and care homes publish themselves. Last checked October 2026.
