The cost
Every kind of respite in West Yorkshire, by the day and by the week: carers on PrimeCarers, local agencies where enough of them publish a rate, and care homes.
| Type of respite | Per day | Per week |
|---|---|---|
| A live-in carer at homeone carer living in, day and night: what live-in carers within reach advertise, with our fee included | £158 | £1,103 |
| Visits of 2 hours a dayat £19 an hour, the middle of what carers near you advertise, with our fee included | £38 | £266 |
| A carer sleeping in overnightthe usual range for a sleeping night on PrimeCarers, with our fee included; a waking night is about £165 to £250 | £160 to £190a night | £1,120 to £1,330 |
| A live-in carer through a local agencythe middle of what 18 nearby agencies advertise | £220 | £1,538 |
| Agency visits of 2 hours a dayat £27 an hour, the middle of what 19 nearby agencies advertise | £54 | £378 |
| A care home place (standard residential fee)the median weekly fee of 8 homes nearby that publish one. This is the long-stay residential rate, not a respite price; a short stay can be priced higher | £168 | £1,177 |
Shaded rows are carers on PrimeCarers, priced with our fee included. The other rows are what agencies and care homes publish, read from the source given in each row. A day of live-in cover is the weekly figure divided by seven.
Which line applies depends on the kind of break. If you are going away, somebody needs to be with the person you look after day and night, so the comparison is a live-in carer at about £1,103 a week against a care home place at £1,177. If you are staying at home and need time to sleep, rest or get out, visits cost far less, and a single overnight is priced by the night.
We do not have enough published respite prices from care homes near you to quote one, so the care home line is the standard residential fee. Homes can price a short respite stay above their long-stay rate, so ask each one what a stay of your length would cost.
A couple can share one live-in carer. On PrimeCarers that is about £1,350 a week for two people, where a care home charges for two places. Bank holidays are charged at one and a half times the carer's normal rate and Christmas Day at twice the rate, so a break over Christmas or Easter costs a little more. Travel is only charged if you agree it with the carer in advance and in writing.
How respite costs compare across the country sets these figures against the national picture, and how to fund respite covers who can help pay, starting with a carer's assessment from the council.
A week of cover
Every row is the same thing: one week of somebody there day and night while you are away. Ours comes from what live-in carers within reach of West Yorkshire advertise. The rest comes from what local agencies and care homes publish about themselves.

Staying at home comes out about £74 a week under the local care home median in West Yorkshire, or £148 over a fortnight, and nobody has to pack. A home is charging for a room, meals and staff on site around the clock; a live-in carer is one person in a house that is already paid for.
Not every break is a fortnight away. If you are staying local and just need to sleep, see friends or get to your own appointments, visiting care is the cheaper shape: 14 hours a week at £19 an hour is £266 a week. The 19 local agencies that publish an hourly rate average £27, which would be £378 for the same hours.
This is deliberately not in the table above. A few hours a day and a carer living in the house are different things, and putting them on one list would make the cheaper one look like the same purchase.
The care home figure is the median weekly fee at 8 homes within about 30 kilometres that publish one, out of 604 in the area. It is the standard residential rate, not a respite price. A home can quote a short respite stay above its standard weekly rate, so treat it as a floor rather than a quote.

What else is near you
We keep a directory of home care agencies and care homes, including the prices they publish. None of them pay us to be listed and we earn nothing if you choose one.
39 of the 574 agencies we track near you say they offer respite. If you would rather go through an agency than book a carer directly, there is a reasonable choice.

19 of them publish an hourly rate at all. The middle of those charges £27 an hour, with the range running £25 to £29. An agency employs and rotas its carers, which is the right answer for some families and is what the extra pays for.
10 of them advertise waking nights, which matters if the person you look after is up in the night and the reason you need a break is that you are not sleeping.
The decision
On price, staying put wins in West Yorkshire, and by a clear margin. But price is not the only reason families choose it.
A couple can share one carer. One live-in carer can look after a husband and wife, at about £1,350 a week for the two of them on PrimeCarers. A care home charges for two places.
Nothing has to move. A fortnight away means packing, settling into an unfamiliar building and coming home again. For someone with dementia the disruption can matter more than the fee, because a new place and a change of routine can be confusing and distressing.
You can start smaller than you think. Respite does not have to be a fortnight. A weekend, or a few hours twice a week so you can sleep or see friends, can be enough to keep you going.
A care home is the better answer for some breaks, particularly when someone needs several staff to move them safely or nursing through the night. Care at home or a care home puts the two side by side, and respite at home or in a care home covers this choice on its own.
For a break of a week or more, a live-in carer covers the whole day: live-in care in West Yorkshire shows the carers and typical rates here, and private carers in West Yorkshire covers visits by the hour.

Questions
It depends on the kind of respite. A live-in carer who stays in the house costs about £158 a day, or £1,103 a week, in West Yorkshire. Visits of two hours a day at around £19 an hour come to £38 a day, or £266 a week. A carer sleeping in overnight is £160 to £190 a night. For a care home, the standard residential fee nearby is about £1,177 a week, and a short respite stay can be priced higher. How respite costs compare across the country puts these beside the national figures.
For a live-in carer who stays in the house, a week is typically £1,103 in West Yorkshire, so a fortnight is about £2,206. For daily visits instead, carers here advertise around £19 an hour, so two hours a day comes to roughly £266 a week. A local agency charges about £27 an hour for the same visits, because you are paying the agency as well as the carer. Nothing is charged until you book.
On the published fees, yes. A standard residential place in a care home in West Yorkshire is around £1,177 a week, the median of 8 homes nearby that publish a fee. That is the long-stay rate, and a short respite stay can be priced higher. A live-in carer at home is typically £1,103. Two things can matter more than the headline figure. A care home charges per person, so a couple pays twice while one live-in carer covers both. And a respite stay means packing, moving and settling somebody into an unfamiliar building for a fortnight, then moving them home again, which for some people is the hardest part of the break.
It depends on who is free. You are talking to self-employed carers directly, so there is no agency rota to wait for, and some carers can start within a few days. If your break is already in the diary, particularly over school holidays or Christmas, it is worth lining someone up now. You can message carers and agree dates before committing to anything.
Possibly. If you look after someone regularly you are entitled to a carer's assessment from your council, which is separate from any assessment of the person you care for, and it can lead to funding for a break. It is worth asking even if the person you look after pays for their own care, because the assessment is about your needs, not theirs. West Yorkshire council sets out how it charges for care and support. How to fund respite care goes through the options.
Whatever you normally do, agreed in advance and written down before you go. That can cover personal care, medication prompts, meals, keeping the house going and company, plus anything specific like a hoist or a night routine. A live-in carer sleeps in the house and is there overnight. If the person you look after is up several times a night, say so early, because that needs a waking night rather than a live-in arrangement and is priced differently.
Tell us and we will help you look for someone else, although a replacement carer cannot be guaranteed. We are an introductory service rather than an agency: we do not employ the carers and we do not run a rota, so there is no bank of staff to send. For a longer break it is sensible to line up a second carer you have already spoken to, so there is somebody who knows the situation.
