What a companion does

Companionship is care that is mostly about company. You might sit and talk over a cup of tea, go for a walk, take someone shopping or to an appointment, play cards, cook a meal together or help keep the house in order.

For many older people who live alone, a regular visitor is what keeps them going out and keeps them in touch. Some companion jobs are for someone living with dementia, where a familiar face and a steady routine matter a great deal.

Companion work usually does not include personal care such as washing and dressing. If a job does, it will say so.

What it pays

Carers advertise companionship a little below personal care, at £15 to £20 an hour. At £18 an hour you would receive £14.40, because our 20% commission on visits under six hours comes out of your rate.

Visits shorter than six hours are charged at the hourly commission rate. The commission is taken out of the rate you advertise rather than added on top of it, and the VAT on it comes out of our share.

What you need to start

  • The right to work in the UK

    You need the right to work in the UK. British and Irish carers show a valid British or Irish passport, checked digitally; everyone else uses a share code from GOV.UK. On a Health and Care Worker visa, GOV.UK said on 22 September 2026 that you can work up to 20 hours a week in another job or your own business while still doing your sponsored job, and that care work counts only if your first certificate of sponsorship was before 22 July 2025 and you have held the visa continuously since. Check your own conditions before you register.

    Care worker visas and self-employment

  • An enhanced DBS check

    You apply for your own enhanced DBS through an umbrella body. We check it when you register: it must have been issued within the last 18 months, and it has to be renewed every 18 months.

  • An identity check

    You prove who you are online with a photo ID document when you register.

  • A short recorded video interview

    You answer a few questions on video, online, whenever suits you. It is how we check that you are caring. It is not a test of technical knowledge.
