What live-in care work is
A live-in carer stays in the client’s home for the length of a placement and supports them through the day. The family provides your own bedroom and your food. Placements range from a week or two of respite cover to ongoing care that lasts months.
The work depends on the person: company and conversation, cooking, housework, medication reminders, personal care, and being there if something happens in the night. Each job says what the family is asking for, so read it before you apply.
Live-in carers usually take a break of around two hours a day. Agree how it will be covered, and your time off between placements, with the family before you start.
What it pays
Live-in placements are priced by the day and carry our lowest commission, 12.5%. A typical placement costs the family £1,120 a week, which is £160 a day; the carer receives £140 a day, or £980 for a seven-day week, before tax.

Rates are the published PrimeCarers bands. You set your own rate; these are what carers on the platform charge. Figures are before Income Tax and National Insurance, which you pay yourself as a self-employed carer.
What you would take home near you
You set your own rate on PrimeCarers, and the rate you advertise is what a client is charged for your time. Our commission comes out of that rate rather than being added to it. Put your week in and the figures below move with it.

Tax is yours to sort out
Carers on PrimeCarers are self-employed, so Income Tax and National Insurance come out of the take-home figure above. Nothing is deducted for you and this page does not work out what you owe. Tax and money as a self-employed carer walks through registering with HMRC and what to put aside.
Rates from the published PrimeCarers bands, because this page is not tied to one town.

The right to work in the UK
You need the right to work in the UK. British and Irish carers show a valid British or Irish passport, checked digitally; everyone else uses a share code from GOV.UK. On a Health and Care Worker visa, GOV.UK said on 22 September 2026 that you can work up to 20 hours a week in another job or your own business while still doing your sponsored job, and that care work counts only if your first certificate of sponsorship was before 22 July 2025 and you have held the visa continuously since. Check your own conditions before you register.
Care worker visas and self-employmentAn enhanced DBS check
You apply for your own enhanced DBS through an umbrella body. We check it when you register: it must have been issued within the last 18 months, and it has to be renewed every 18 months.
Enhanced DBS and the Update ServiceAn identity check
You prove who you are online with a photo ID document when you register.
A short recorded video interview
You answer a few questions on video, online, whenever suits you. It is how we check that you are caring. It is not a test of technical knowledge.
PrimeCarers does not verify qualifications, training or references. Put your qualifications on your profile and invite past employers or families to leave a reference there: families read profiles before they book, and they will ask about your experience.

Questions carers ask
You live in the client’s home for the placement and support them through the day: company, meals, housework, medication reminders and personal care where it is needed. Every job lists what the family is asking for.
You set your own day rate. Families on PrimeCarers pay £1,050 to £1,400 a week for live-in care, and our commission on live-in work is 12.5%. At a typical £1,120 a week you would receive £980 before tax.
Live-in carers usually take around two hours a day to themselves, plus time off between placements. Agree how the break will be covered with the family before you accept a placement.
In your own bedroom in the client’s home. The family provides the room and your food, and you do not pay rent for it.
Yes. Every live-in carer on PrimeCarers is self-employed: you choose your placements and set your rate, and you pay your own tax. Where to look for live-in care work compares the other routes, including agencies that employ live-in carers.
