What night care work is
Night carers look after someone at home overnight so the person is safe and their family can sleep. There are two kinds of night.
On a sleeping night you sleep in the home, usually in a spare room, and get up if you are needed. On a waking night you stay awake the whole time: helping with the toilet, turning someone in bed, settling someone living with dementia, or keeping watch.
Each job says which kind of night it is and how many nights a week the family needs. A night runs well past six hours, so it carries our lower shift commission rather than the hourly one.
What it pays
Nights run past six hours, so they carry our 15% shift commission. A waking night at £150 pays you £127.50; a sleeping night at £130 pays you £110.50.
Sleeping nights
You sleep in the home and get up if needed. 15% commission
Your rate: £130 to £145 a night
You receive: £110.50 to £123.25 a night
Waking nights
You stay awake through the night. 15% commission
Your rate: £150 to £160 a night
You receive: £127.50 to £136 a night
Rates are the published PrimeCarers bands. You set your own rate; these are what carers on the platform charge. Figures are before Income Tax and National Insurance, which you pay yourself as a self-employed carer.
What you would take home near you
You set your own rate on PrimeCarers, and the rate you advertise is what a client is charged for your time. Our commission comes out of that rate rather than being added to it. Put your week in and the figures below move with it.

A waking night runs past six hours, so it is charged at the shift commission rate. The commission is taken out of the rate you advertise rather than added on top of it, and the VAT on it comes out of our share.

The right to work in the UK
You need the right to work in the UK. British and Irish carers show a valid British or Irish passport, checked digitally; everyone else uses a share code from GOV.UK. On a Health and Care Worker visa, GOV.UK said on 22 September 2026 that you can work up to 20 hours a week in another job or your own business while still doing your sponsored job, and that care work counts only if your first certificate of sponsorship was before 22 July 2025 and you have held the visa continuously since. Check your own conditions before you register.
Care worker visas and self-employmentAn enhanced DBS check
You apply for your own enhanced DBS through an umbrella body. We check it when you register: it must have been issued within the last 18 months, and it has to be renewed every 18 months.

You answer a few questions on video, online, whenever suits you. It is how we check that you are caring. It is not a test of technical knowledge.

Questions carers ask
On a sleeping night you sleep in the home and get up if you are needed. On a waking night you stay awake throughout, because the person needs help or watching during the night. Waking nights pay more.
You set your own rate. Carers on PrimeCarers charge £130 to £145 for a sleeping night and £150 to £160 for a waking night. Our commission on nights is 15%, so a £160 waking night pays you £136.
