What a private carer job is
A private carer works for a family directly rather than for a care agency. On PrimeCarers that means you are self-employed: you are not our employee, you choose which jobs to apply for, and the family chooses who they book.
The work is the same care you would do anywhere, from a couple of hours of company and help around the house to personal care, overnight care and live-in placements. What changes is who decides. You set your rate, you agree the hours with the family, and you can turn down work that does not suit you.
Being self-employed means you register with HMRC and pay your own Income Tax and National Insurance. Nothing is deducted for you.
What it pays
A carer who advertises £20 an hour is charged at £20 an hour and receives £16 of it. Our 20% commission comes out of your rate; it is never added on top.
Hourly visits
Visits under six hours. 20% commission
Your rate: £18 to £25 an hour
You receive: £14.40 to £20 an hour
Longer shifts
Visits of six hours or more. 15% commission
Your rate: about £18 an hour
You receive: £15.30 an hour
Live-in care
£1,050 to £1,400 a week for the family. 12.5% commission
Your rate: £150 to £200 a day
You receive: £131.25 to £175 a day
Waking nights
You stay awake through the night. 15% commission
Your rate: £150 to £160 a night
You receive: £127.50 to £136 a night
Rates are the published PrimeCarers bands. You set your own rate; these are what carers on the platform charge. Figures are before Income Tax and National Insurance, which you pay yourself as a self-employed carer.

You set your own rate on PrimeCarers, and the rate you advertise is what a client is charged for your time. Our commission comes out of that rate rather than being added to it. Put your week in and the figures below move with it.

Visits shorter than six hours are charged at the hourly commission rate. The commission is taken out of the rate you advertise rather than added on top of it, and the VAT on it comes out of our share.

The right to work in the UK
You need the right to work in the UK. British and Irish carers show a valid British or Irish passport, checked digitally; everyone else uses a share code from GOV.UK. On a Health and Care Worker visa, GOV.UK said on 22 September 2026 that you can work up to 20 hours a week in another job or your own business while still doing your sponsored job, and that care work counts only if your first certificate of sponsorship was before 22 July 2025 and you have held the visa continuously since. Check your own conditions before you register.

You apply for your own enhanced DBS through an umbrella body. We check it when you register: it must have been issued within the last 18 months, and it has to be renewed every 18 months.
