What live-in care is
A live-in carer moves into your relative's home in Christchurch and is there day and night: help with washing and dressing in the morning, meals, medication prompts at the right times, company through the day, a hand getting to bed, and someone in the house if there is a problem at 3am. It is one person, chosen by you, rather than a rota of visits from an agency, which is why families arrange it when visits have stopped being enough or a care home is being talked about and nobody wants it.
On PrimeCarers you choose the carer yourself. You search for Christchurch, read the profiles of the live-in carers who could come, and message the ones whose experience fits. Live-in carers move in for the placement. The profiles shown are ordered by distance within the area sample; confirm the care postcode, dates and support needed with each carer.
We are an introductory service, not an agency. Before a carer appears we check their identity and right to work, confirm an accepted criminal-record check (Enhanced DBS issued within the last 2 years, DBS Update Service, Scottish PVG or Access NI), which has to be renewed every 2 years, and they record an online interview. We do not check qualifications, training or references. We set up the contract between you and the carer, handle the weekly invoicing and payment, and arrange insurance for platform visits, within the policy’s terms (no clinical procedures). The carer sets their own rate, and the rate on their profile is the rate you pay.
How live-in care works goes through a placement from the first message to the first week, and a live-in carer's daily routine shows what a normal day looks like.
Who it helps
Live-in care is arranged for many reasons, and the right carer depends on which of these is yours. Each page goes into the situation properly.
What it costs
The middle 50% of sampled advertised live-in rates around Dorset are £1,050 to £1,195 a week on PrimeCarers, with our fee included, and a typical week is £1,120. A carer's rate is the same wherever the placement is, so the area's sampled figures are Christchurch's figures. Here is where that sits against a care home, and how much else is available locally.
Care home fees are the median weekly fee published by homes in Dorset, before extras. Homes that do not publish a fee are not counted, and fees vary widely between homes. At home you keep paying the household bills and the carer's food, so add those before you compare.
For a couple the gap is wide: one live-in carer for both of you is about £1,350 a week, and a care home charges two fees. Work it through for your own numbers.
Hourly visits in Dorset are covered on the cost of home care in Dorset page. Past about 35 hours a week, live-in care costs about the same and somebody is there all day.

The cost of live-in care in DorsetHow to arrange it
Four steps, and the first two cost nothing. You choose the carer; we handle the checks, the contract and the payments.
Safety first
Read the carer’s profile, discuss relevant experience and ask questions before agreeing care. Our published checks and terms explain the support available.
Before a carer appears, we check their ID and right to work, see an enhanced DBS check (PVG in Scotland, Access NI in Northern Ireland) issued within the last 2 years, and interview them online. We do not check qualifications, training or references. References and reviews on a profile are not verified by us, so ask each carer about the skills and training your relative’s care needs.
Visits booked through PrimeCarers are covered by the carer insurance policy we arrange, within its terms. It does not cover clinical procedures (other than prompting or handing over oral medicines), and tasks such as giving medicines or moving and handling are covered only where the carer has been trained for them. Work arranged outside the platform is not covered. Read the policy before you rely on it.
Contact the PrimeCarers team for help using the service, discussing options or resolving a platform issue. You and your chosen carer agree and direct the care.
Ask our team for help seeking alternative carers if arrangements change. Agree a cover plan in advance: availability and replacement start dates need confirmation.

Someone to talk to first
Most families start with a call: what your relative needs, what it would cost, whether a live-in carer is the right answer or hourly visits would do, and what to ask a carer when you speak to them. Charlotte has those conversations every day and can tell you which of the carers in Christchurch might suit, though the choice is always yours.

Around Christchurch

Questions
The middle 50% of sampled advertised live-in rates around Dorset fall between £1,050 and £1,195 a week on PrimeCarers, with our fee included, and a typical week is £1,120. That is £160 a day for someone there day and night. A carer sets one rate and it does not change with the town, so a carer from the next county costs the same in Christchurch as at home. Complex care, such as advanced dementia or hoisting, starts from about £1,260 a week. The cost of live-in care in Dorset goes through the figures in full, with an estimator.
Search for carers offering live-in care for Christchurch, then confirm travel, dates and suitability directly. The profiles on this page are a sample from the surrounding area, not a complete list or a guarantee of availability. A live-in carer moves in for the placement, so relevant experience and your household routine matter more than distance alone.
Contact carers to ask about your dates and care needs. A profile does not confirm availability, and a start date must be agreed with the carer. If you need someone this week, emergency care explains what to do and what we can help with.
Yes. Before a carer appears on PrimeCarers they complete identity, right-to-work and interview checks, plus an accepted criminal-record check: a standalone Enhanced DBS within 2 years, DBS Update Service, Scottish PVG or Access NI. Renewal and rechecks depend on the route. Their skills, qualifications and training are for you to check with them, and every profile shows their experience and reviews so you can. How we vet carers sets out each step.
For one person the two land close together. A typical live-in week in Christchurch is £1,120, and the care homes in Dorset that publish their fees charge a median of £1,390 a week for residential care. At home you keep paying the household bills and the carer's food, so add those before you compare. For a couple the difference is large: one live-in carer costs about £1,350 a week for both of you, while a care home charges two fees. The care home comparison has a calculator for your own numbers.
Funding depends on your needs, finances and the rules where you live. Ask your council for a care needs assessment and, where relevant, a financial assessment. Help with care costs depends on eligible needs, finances and the agreed care plan. Funding live-in care in Dorset explains the local route. Check the responsible authority using your home postcode, especially if you live near a boundary. The live-in care funding guide explains other possible support and eligibility.
Yes. A live-in carer needs a room of their own with a bed and somewhere to keep their things, and meals, which most families budget at £5 to £10 a day on the weekly shop. They do not need an en suite or anything else beyond a comfortable home. If the house is small, say so when you message carers; some are happy with a box room and some are not, and it is better settled before anyone arrives. Where live-in carers sleep and what a live-in carer needs cover the details.
Most live-in carers work in stints of two to six weeks and then take a week or two off, and they will tell you their pattern when you first talk. The usual answer is a second carer from the same search who covers those weeks and gets to know your relative too, or family stepping in. If a carer is unwell or needs time away unexpectedly, you can search for another carer, or call us and we will help you look. Cover at short notice is not guaranteed. How live-in care works explains the rota in more detail.
PrimeCarers charges nothing to stop or change care. The notice you give your carer is in the contract between you: 48 hours until 168 hours of care have been worked, and 7 days after that. Days already agreed are payable if you cancel them, unless the reason is an unplanned hospital stay, illness, or something else you and the carer agree, and a carer can always waive that at their discretion. Bank holidays are charged at one and a half times the carer's normal rate and Christmas Day at double, which is also in the contract.
